The two men, aged 43 and 45, lost their lives in a huge snowslide that barrelled down from the 4,390-metre peak of Mount Apharwat in Indian-administered Kashmir and buried nearly two dozen foreigners on a slope in the popular ski resort of Gulmarg, according to reports.

When high-altitude rescue teams rushed to the site on snow scooters they retrieved the bodies of the two Polish skiers and rescued 21 other people from the site of the avalanche, including 19 foreign nationals and two local guides, the PAP news agency reported.

The rescued skiers, whose nationalities have yet to be confirmed, have been taken to a nearby clinic for treatment.

The ski resort of Gulmarg attracts swathes of snow enthusiasts and tourists all through the year.
