45 dead, 463 hurt on Polish roads over August long weekend

Forty-five people were killed and 463 injured in 407 accidents on Polish roads from Friday to Tuesday, police have said, summing up an extended weekend during which Poles traveled to popular tourist sites, encouraged by fine weather.

Meanwhile, officers stopped more than 1,756 drunk drivers during this year's August long weekend, Robert Opas from the National Police Headquarters (KGP) said on Wednesday.

A total of 555 drivers temporarily lost their licences for exceeding the speed limit by more than 50 kph in built-up areas, state news agency PAP reported.

Tuesday, August 15, was a public holiday in Poland, marking the Catholic Feast of the Assumption and Armed Forces Day.
