The Office of the Sejm, the Polish lower house, notified prosecutors about the incident caused by Grzegorz Braun on Tuesday night, state news agency PAP reported.

Earlier in the day, Braun took an extinguisher and sprayed powder to put out Hanukkah candles standing in the lobby of the parliament, according to news outlets.

The MP with the far-right Confederation party then took to the parliamentary podium where he described the Hanukkah candles as "Satanic" and declared that he was restoring "normality."

Jacek Cichocki, the head of the Sejm Office, referred Braun to the National Public Prosecutor's Office for disrupting the ceremony to light the religious candles, designed to mark the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah.

According to Cichocki, Braun committed a "crime against the freedom of conscience and religion, against honour and bodily inviolability and against public security."

Earlier, Braun was excluded from the Sejm sitting and received a maximum fine, the PAP news agency reported.

Poland's new Prime Minister Donald Tusk; the US ambassador to Poland, Mark Brzezinski; the Chief Rabbi of Poland, Michael Schudrich; parliamentarians and Catholic religious leaders have condemned the incident.
