Izabela Leszczyna announced the figure in parliament on Thursday, public broadcaster Polish Radio's polskieradio24.pl website reported.

Appearing before MPs from the Sejm (lower house) health committee, the minister said that "public expenditure on health protection will exceed PLN 195 billion (EUR 45 billion) in 2024.

Leszczyna added that this would represent "an increase of some PLN 30 billion (EUR 6.9 billion) compared with the spending allocated in 2023."

The minister told lawmakers the additional health spending would fund specialist training courses for medical workers, a 30% pay rise for medical university teachers and long-term investments in health infrastructure, among other objectives.

Meanwhile, the government on Thursday unveiled a new supplemental bill to the 2024 budget, containing PLN 3 billion (EUR 693 million) for oncology care, as well as mental health services and rare-disease treatments for children and youth, polskieradio24.pl reported.

An earlier government bill which earmarked the sum for state media, was vetoed by President Andrzej Duda on December 23.

On December 20, Prime Minister Donald Tusk's government's replaced the CEO's of state media in a move it said was designed to "restore impartiality" of public broadcasters and "public order," while the president said the measure "breached the constitution," according to news outlets.
