‘Coolcation’ – a different kind of holiday
While sun-soaked beaches once dominated summer holiday wish lists, more travelers now seek cooler spots rather than temperatures pushing 40 degrees Celsius. The trend has been dubbed the “coolcation,” reflecting a conscious choice by vacationers to trade busy, scorching resorts for milder weather and fewer crowds.
Many are turning to Northern Europe or Baltic destinations, where long sunny days and comfortable climates lend themselves to active outdoor pursuits and sightseeing.
“In the height of summer—July and August—there is growing interest in places that offer a milder or cooler climate,” explained Deniz Rymkiewicz, an expert at online travel agency eSky.pl.
“Nordic countries like Denmark and Iceland, and Baltic nations with their lengthy summer daylight hours, are gaining popularity, as the temperatures let you enjoy activities outside or explore city attractions in comfort.”
Scandinavia and the Baltics on the rise
Eurostat figures for January to October 2024 show that while countries like Albania and Malta have posted record growth in visitor numbers (33% in Albania’s case), Sweden and Finland have also seen more tourists—up 8.6% and 9.1% respectively.
The same trend benefits Norway, Estonia, Latvia, and even Poland, which—despite its unpredictable weather—is drawing more summer visitors seeking cooler climes.
