Duda has become the first-ever Pole to win the Chess World Cup after beating Russia’s Sergei Karyakin in 30 moves on Thursday evening in Sochi, Russia.

The 23-year-old Duda, who hails from the southern Polish city of Wieliczka, was also the first Pole to advance to the World Cup finals after knocking out world champion Magnus Carlsen in the semifinals.

Carlsen, who claimed third spot, was also the first to congratulate Duda on his victory in the biannual tournament.

The World Cup closing ceremony is set to be held on Friday in Sochi.
