Tokyo 2020: Poland's Tomala wins surprise gold in 50km race walk

Poland’s Dawid Tomala on Friday stunned the field and won a surprise gold in the Olympic men’s 50km race walk to bag his country’s 11th medal of the Tokyo 2020 Games.

The 31-year-old cruised to victory after taking the lead just before the midpoint of the race. He powered ahead to finish ahead of Germany’s Jonathan Hilbert and Canada’s Evan Dunfee.

Tomala’s gold added to Poland's triumphs in the men’s and women's hammer throw as well as the mixed 4x400m relay in Tokyo.

Polish athletes have so far earned four gold, three silver and four bronze medals at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, which run in Japan until Sunday.
