Tennis: Poland’s Świątek reaches China Open 3rd round

Poland’s world No. 2 Iga Świątek has advanced to the third round of the China Open tennis tournament in Beijing, where she will take on countrywoman Magda Linette.

Świątek on Tuesday eased past France's Varvara Gracheva 6-4, 6-1 in the second round of the women's singles in the Chinese capital to set up a meeting with the 25th-ranked Linette, public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported.

Linette had reached the round of 16 with a walkover win on Monday against American Jennifer Brady.

The two Poles will face off for a place in the quarterfinals on Wednesday.

The 2023 China Open runs until October 8.

Poland's Świątek last month lost her world No. 1 spot to Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka, after spending 75 weeks on top of the world rankings.
