Świątek shared the news in a video on Instagram, explaining the details of the decision.
The world-class athlete expressed her excitement about working with such a renowned specialist, who has trained various top players worldwide throughout his career.
"If we work well together, this could be a great partnership and a coach who can help me grow in the coming years," said Świątek.
She also noted how happy she is to have made a quick decision, which allows her to begin a new chapter in her career. Świątek asked her fans for their support in the weeks leading up to the WTA Finals.
In an official statement released by her team, it was emphasized that Wim Fissette brings extensive global experience from coaching numerous Grand Slam champions and world number ones, including Kim Clijsters and Naomi Osaka.
Świątek’s team also confirmed that alongside Fissette, she will continue to be supported by Maciej Ryszczuk (physiotherapist and fitness coach), sparring partner Tomasz Moczek, and psychologist Daria Abramowicz as she prepares for the WTA Finals.
Who is Wim Fissette?
The 44-year-old Belgian has previously worked with six different WTA world number ones. He started his career as Kim Clijsters’ hitting partner, according to Eurosport.
Fissette describes himself as a coach focused on positive attitudes, fostering team spirit, and aligning with the mindset of the athletes he trains, as outlined on his official website.
"I’m very excited to work with Iga and join her team of experts. I had the chance to meet her in 2018 when she won Junior Wimbledon, while my player at the time, Angelique Kerber, won the senior title. Since then, I’ve been following her career and have had the pleasure of sharing the court with her in training sessions alongside players I’ve coached, as well as witnessing many intense matches against her," said Fissette in a press release.
"Iga is a role model for many players thanks to her consistency and focus on the court. I’m really looking forward to working with her, and I hope we’ll both continue to grow and chase our sporting dreams", he added.
Iga Świątek is scheduled to compete in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, from November 2-9, where she will defend the title she won last year in Cancún, Mexico.
