The 32nd edition of the EnergaCamerimage International Film Festival in Toruń, Poland, opened amid significant controversy.
The event began with heightened tension following contentious comments made by the festival’s director about gender representation in the film industry.
In response, director Coralie Fargeat withdrew her film Substance, and director Steve McQueen canceled his attendance.
Żydowicz later issued an apology, expressing his support for women's struggle for recognition in the industry, while the festival jury, led by Cate Blanchett, endorsed the call for greater inclusivity at the event.
Before the opening ceremony, a group of women staged a protest in reaction to Żydowicz's remarks, demanding both an apology and concrete actions to demonstrate his commitment.
The demonstration, titled Why Do We Need Freedom For Women?, advocated for an end to patriarchal standards and for equality for women and other marginalized groups.
During the Saturday gala, it was announced that Marina Abramović would be honored for her artistic contributions, though she was unable to attend due to health reasons.
The internationally renowned actress Cate Blanchett appeared in the hall, having been appointed the chair of this year's jury.
Participants were encouraged to fully engage with the event, which will run until November 23.
On Sunday, Blanchett attended the opening of the MANIFESTO exhibition at the Centre for Contemporary Art in Torun, Poland.
