This historic 1813 Holey Dollar, once part of Poland’s collection before going missing, was recovered, as announced by the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Canberra on social media.
This exceptional coin, made from a Spanish silver dollar minted in Mexico in 1777 was originally acquired in 1914 by Polish collector Walery Amrogowicz. He later donated it to the Scientific Society in Toruń, Poland, and it remained in a local museum until its disappearance between 2011 and 2018.
After being stolen, it changed hands through auctions in Germany and Melbourne before being sold to a Perth collector for €319,000.
The Australian Federal Police recovered the coin in Perth in August 2024, and following an investigation, it was officially handed over to Polish authorities during a ceremony at the Polish Embassy in Canberra on February 14, 2025.
