The meeting was held ahead of the alliance's summit next year in Madrid.

NATO foreign ministers meeting in Riga examined threats to the security of the alliance and the Euro-Atlantic area, and they also discussed the simmering migrant crisis at the Polish-Belarusian border.

Participants in the two-day event analysed cooperation between NATO and the European Union as well as the military alliance's new Strategic Concept.

The meeting in Latvia was attended by the foreign ministers of Georgia and Ukraine, with its added focus on the 2008 war in Georgia and ongoing tensions in eastern Ukraine.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba told the gathering that Russia had amassed 115,000 troops and heavy weaponry near his country's border, in the occupied Crimea peninsula and in parts of the separatist-controlled Luhansk and Donetsk regions of eastern Ukraine.

Kuleba urged NATO to boost military cooperation with Kyiv and prepare a package of measures, including sanctions, to deter Russia from attacking his country.
