Taylor Dudley, 35, was freed at the Russia-Poland Bagrationovsk-Bezledy border crossing on Thursday after months of negotiations, according to CNN.

The broadcaster said Russian authorities released Dudley to a group of officials including a representative from the US embassy in Warsaw.

The Department of State and the US embassies in Moscow and Warsaw helped secure Dudley’s release, CNN reported, citing a spokesperson for his family.

Dudley was detained by Russian border patrol police in April last year after crossing from Poland into the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad, CNN said on its website.

He was in Poland attending a music festival, and it is not clear why he crossed the border, it added.

An official told CNN that no exchange had been made on the US side for Dudley.

Last month, Russia freed American basketball star Brittney Griner in exchange for Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout, according to officials.

In April last year, Russia released former US Marine Trevor Reed and the United States freed Russian pilot Konstantin Yaroshenko, according to reports at the time.

US President Joe Biden said in December that his administration remained committed to securing the release of imprisoned former Marine Paul Whelan from Russia, the Reuters news agency reported.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov was quoted as saying last month that Moscow and Washington would continue to talk about possible prisoner swaps.
