One of the key topics during the NATO summit in Washington is the issue of Russian aggression against Ukraine.
"In my opinion, Ukrainians are already in NATO about 80 percent," assessed Kwaśniewski. "With or without an invitation, we have Ukraine in NATO because Ukrainians receive NATO weapons, are trained by NATO countries, receive funds from NATO member states, and also have access to NATO secrets," argued the former President of Poland. According to him, the issue of Ukraine joining the ranks of NATO member states is purely a political decision.
During the conversation, Konrad Piasecki presented opinions suggesting that Ukraine's potential accession to NATO could provoke Russia and complicate future peace negotiations with that country.
"I don't know how else we could provoke Russia because Russia provokes daily," replied Kwaśniewski, citing the example of Monday's attack on a children's hospital in Kyiv as one of Russia's recent "provocations."
"That bomb didn't land there accidentally. It's all planned by the Russians," he argued, emphasizing that Ukraine's entry into NATO could not only be significant for the future of the NATO alliance but could also boost Ukrainian morale.
Despite some NATO members having no doubts about this, making such a decision depends on obtaining clear consent from all allies.
