The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said on Friday it will push for international sanctions against those responsible for holding what it calls 'pseudo-elections' in regions occupied by Russia. These include the Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia, Kherson, and Crimea regions.

The Ministry's statement on its website explicitly named those they believe should be held accountable: "Those behind these illegitimate elections, which span from authorities in the Russian Federation to representatives of the occupation administration and associated election structures, should face justice. Consequently, we are championing the introduction of fresh international sanctions against such individuals."

Ukraine has vehemently stressed that these so-called elections, set to take place within its territories currently under Russian control, will not be recognized legally. The Foreign Ministry further noted that these events not only undermine Ukraine's autonomy, but also further delegitimize the Russian legal framework.

Despite these regions being part of Ukraine, the Kremlin has mandated the inclusion of Crimea and the four aforementioned Ukrainian regions in the upcoming regional elections slated for this Sunday in Russia. Not all of these territories are under full Russian military control.

The date for the controversial elections was previously fixed for September 10. However, reports indicate that early "voting" commenced a few days prior.
